January Jones: 2010 Emmys
Not exactly known as a wallflower, January Jones caused quite a stir in Hollywood yesterday when she arrived on the red carpet at the 2010 Emmys in an electric blue Versace gown. I adore the dress—which I think is a total work of art—and was thrilled as usual to be creating January’s makeup look for the big night.
January is a self professed fashion junkie who’s always shared my passion for the extraordinary and avant-garde; I knew this dress would be cause for conversation when she first showed me the frock in the pages of Italian Vogue, but clearly I had no idea how much conversation!
I absolutely LOVE that January is fearless with her choices and knows exactly what she likes. Have we forgotten that fashion is supposed to be about self expression? Yeah, Ryan Seacrest I’m talking to you, what the hell do you know about couture anyway? Fashion was meant to be fun and yes, occasionally shocking, THERE, I said it. Keep it up Ms. Jones, I don’t think I’m the only one who finds your take on this whole red carpet thing refreshing.
My inspiration for January’s make up had one foot in the past and one firmly in the present, which as it happens suits her like no other woman I know.
My first thought when I saw the dramatic silhouette of the dress was that it reminded me of something you might see in a fashion photo taken by Irving Penn in the ’50s. The sweetheart bust, the cinched waist, the dramatic train was something that would have looked incredible worn by Penn’s iconic model/wife Lisa Fonssagrives-Penn, and there it was like lightning!
I would pay homage to the world’s first supermodel and her signature exaggerated cat eye, while updating the classic look with glowing cheeks lush lips and ultra feminine colors for a kind of simple sculptural beauty that could only be 2010.
Here’s a quick breakdown:
- I prepped her skin with Josie Maran Argan Oil primer spray, Epicuren 100% Aloe Vera and Chanel Sublimage Serum just around the outer eye area.
- I used my favorite Make Up Forever Face and Body Make Up applied with a beauty blender sponge doused in Dr. Haushka Rosewater to even out her complexion then gave her cheeks a soft wash of cream color Penny Lane by Nars.
- I lined her upper lid with Ecriture de Chanel liquid liner pen in Noir coming WAY out past the outer edge to create a dramatic winged line.
- I curled the lashes twice them applied Chanel inimitable mascara in black on the top lashes and purple on the bottom lashes.
- Stila Kajal liner in Amethyst inside the eye on the outer bottom corners of the and I added lash ends by Ardell to the top edge of the lid.
- I dusted the brow bone and eyelid with Make Up Forever Star Powder in #942 white with mauve iridescence.
- Her lips were a combination of Nars Matte lippencil in Roman Holiday topped with Chanel new Rouge Allure lip gloss in Confidence.
- I finished with a tiny dusting of Koh Gen Do loose powder to the center of the face to make sure the glow was in all the right places.

She looked amazing! It’s nice to see an actress with her own ideas about fashion.
What color was the Makeup Forever foundation that you used on her? Also, did you use any concealer? I really appreciate you telling us which products you used on her!
On January I used Ivory #20 and as for concealer I used Make Up For Ever HD concealer #315. Thanks for your questions!
Did you do January Jones makeup for the Versace campaign I heard she is doing? I would love if you would do a new feature / blog item on day and night makeup for January Jones and give all the products and step by step instructions.
