Lauren Hutton: Mind The Gap

I remember being very young and complaining to my mother about how much I hated the gap between my teeth and how I really needed braces or my life just may be over. She looked right at me and said, very incredulously, “Lauren Hutton has a gap between her teeth and she’s one of the most beautiful women in the world.”

That moment shifted my perception forever.

Long after my teeth had aligned themselves on their own, I still revere faces with character. I’ve actually mourned my boring straight teeth many times wishing for cool sexy ones like David Bowie’s, Patricia Arquette’s or Vanessa Paradis’. Don’t even get me started on Lara Stone!

I love my mom for unknowingly turning my gaze toward the unique so early in life and always celebrating unconventional beauty, for that I am eternally grateful.

Now you can see why I might be thrilled about having the opportunity to work with Lauren, her being one of my biggest beauty icons of all time, and yesterday it actually happened! We were invited to her idyllic home by the beach for a cover shoot (which I will be posting the moment it comes out) where we spent the day in her enchanting garden. We talked make up, history, traveling, the rapture of edible gardening and I was in heaven. She was every bit as fascinating, wildly intelligent and eccentric as I’d dreamed. Not only is she at 66 more radiant than most, but she’s still a pro, completely engaged in the creative process and happens to still possess incredible personal style. We should all be so lucky!

I was fortunate enough for her to send me home with an assortment of goodies from her make up line which I can’t wait to try out, especially after hearing how much passion and research she’s put into to every product she’s created. The line is financed by Lauren herself and I found her philosophy about beauty totally contagious. How refreshing in this time where a woman’s age is something to hide rather than celebrate and the pursuit of physical perfection dominates our lives to hear a woman say, “I’ve laughed more, I’ve cried more and I’ve loved more. Why should I hide it?” Amen Sister, Amen!
